ABALONE fishers, including those who visit Yanchep Lagoon and The Spot are reminded that no abalone fishing will be allowed this Sunday, January 1.

Instead West Coast Zone fishers will be permitted to collect abalone between 7am and 8am only on Sunday, January 8.

Department of Fisheries strategic fisheries policy director Nathan Harrison said the change of date was made due to safety concerns for fishers following New Year’s Eve.

“We don’t want a situation where people, who have been celebrating the New Year, then try their hand at abalone fishing first thing in the morning on Sunday, January 1,’’ he said.

“This could potentially put fishers and surf life saving volunteers at risk.”

Fisheries and marine officers will be patrolling abalone fishing locations to ensure compliance with the change of date.
