Affordable units near Butler station

The Liberal National Government says affordable apartments will be built on Lot 1757 Fintona Cres (coloured red) close to the Butler train station.

LAST week Yanchep News Online said the Housing Authority was progressing plans to have at least 500 affordable apartments built within walking distance of the Butler train station.

This is incorrect.

In fact the Liberal National Government’s Connected Living  program has the capacity to deliver about 500 one, two and three-bedroom apartments spread over five sites including Lot 1757 Fintona Cres in Butler.

Commercial operations general manager Nigel Hindmarsh said a developer would prepare detailed proposals for the Connected Living site in Butler.

He said the authority was not able to disclose the name of the preferred developer for the 10,010sqm Butler site while they were still in a competitive procurement process.

But the authority had released details of the site as part of the Connected Living expression of interest process in December 2015.

“The (developer) has been invited to prepare a detailed proposal and the Housing Authority will enter into negotiations subject to acceptance of the proposal,’’ he said.

“The Housing Authority’s vison for the Connected Living program is to deliver more affordable developments around key transit precincts and activity centres in the metropolitan area.’’

Housing Minister Brendon Grylls said the development proposal had to meet the Connected Living objectives of affordability, diversity, design quality and innovation in order to proceed.

“This initiative will make better use of existing rail infrastructure while helping to transform the Perth housing market through the delivery of more affordable developments around activity centres,’’ he said.

Mr Grylls said Connected Living had been well received by industry and he expected to announce development partners for the first sites – other projects are planned for East Perth, Gosnells, Midland and Perth – in early 2017, subject to acceptable detailed proposals and successful contract negotiations.

“Working with the private sector is an excellent way to efficiently deliver affordable housing and shared equity home ownership options for low to moderate income households.

“Connected Living will pave the way for future infill and transit-oriented living in Perth.

“Our vision is to transform the housing market through the delivery of well-located housing around key transit precincts and activity centres.”
