Contractors short listed for freeway extension to Romeo Rd

Main Roads WA timeline for the Mitchell Fwy extension to Romeo Rd says work is expected to start this year and be completed in 2022.

TWO building contractors, which have been shortlisted for the Mitchell Fwy extension from Hester Ave to Romeo Rd project, are due to submit their quotes by July 2020.

NRW Contracting Pty Ltd with WBHO Infrastructure Pty Ltd (H2R) and BMD Construction Pty Limited with Georgiou Group Pty Limited (Mitchell Extension JV) were today announced on the shortlist for the $215 million project.

Federal Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Minister Alan Tudge said the extension would bust congestion on the local road network, reduce travel times and improve safety and connectivity for people in Perth’s north.

“It’s part of a suite of major, job-creating transport infrastructure projects designed to support the expansion of Perth’s fast growing outer-northern suburbs,” he said.

Transport and Planning Rita Saffioti said the Mitchell Fwy carried some of the highest traffic demands in Perth, linking the fast growing northern suburbs to the CBD.

“This much needed extension of the freeway will take traffic off Marmion Ave and provide another travel option for residents in the northern suburbs while creating and supporting hundreds of local Western Australian jobs,” she said.

“This is great news for northern suburbs residents and I’m pleased to see local WA companies involved in this project.

“We are optimising planning to ensure the project connects into existing rail, road and cycling networks as well as the Metronet Yanchep rail extension.

She said the project would create more than 1200 jobs during the construction phase.

The Main Roads WA timeline for the project says work is expected to start this year and be completed in 2022.

In Freeway extension has potential to threaten cockatoos, February 22 Yanchep News Online reported the project requires the clearing of up to 50ha of banksia woodlands, clearing of up to 328 potential breeding trees for Carnaby’s cockatoos and the clearing of up to eight trees each containing between one and four potentially suitable hollows for nesting as well as clearing of up to 96ha of high quality foraging habitat.

In Environmentalist say freeway clearing needs minimising, February 26 the Quinns Rocks Environmental Group said the loss of habitat was concerning as studies showed the high conservation value of bushland in the area where the freeway was proposed to go, with plants and animals lost from other parts of the regions persisting there.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian and Western Australian governments, with each contributing $107.5 million.
