GINGIN Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service captain Nikki Woods has won the excellence in volunteer management gong at the 2018 WA Volunteer of the Year awards.

Mrs Wood, who has been a Gingin resident for 17 years, said she was super proud when she found out she had won the award.

“I couldn’t make it to the gala dinner as I was on a family holiday in Bali,’’ she said.

“I was over the moon when I found out I had been nominated and then to win it was amazing.

“I don’t do what I do to be recognised but to know that all the hard work and love I have put into GGVFRS hasn’t gone unnoticed it so nice.

She said Scott Davidson and Graeme Maitland-Smith from Gingin VFRS had attended in her place.

“I have been captain for about six years and have been a member for 10 years.’’

She said the captain’s job was to do whatever needed to be done.

“Gingin VFRS is a team and we all work well together.

“I like to think I’m really approachable and caring, I always check in on all members after a job.

“I deal a lot with the district officers and other DFES staff.

“Really just like the rest of the members.’’
