LINDA Aitken will be the new Mayor of Wanneroo after winning 24.39 per cent of the vote in the September 2 extraordinary mayoral election.

Cr Aitken has lived in the northern suburbs for the past four decades where she and her husband Vince have owned and operated a small electrical contracting business.

She unsuccessfully ran against former Wanneroo mayor Tracey Roberts for the seat of Pearce in May this year and before that she lost to Butler MLA John Quigley in the March 2021 state election.

The North-East ward councillor’s nearest rival South-West ward councillor Vinh Nguyen won 12.93 per cent of the 26,479 valid votes counted.

Former Australian defence force aviation firefighter Scott Wilkinson won 10.88 per cent with South ward councillor James Rowe claiming 10.33 per cent.

Cr Aitken was elected to the Wanneroo council in 2013 as a North ward councillor and again in 2017 to represent the North-East ward and will now serve as Mayor until the city’s next regular Mayoral election in October 2023.

Cr Aitken will be sworn in as Mayor at a ceremony at the Wanneroo civic centre on Monday, September 5.

The Western Australian Electoral Commission has announced the results of the 2022 extraordinary mayoral election for the City of Wanneroo.
