MOTORISTS who use Indian Ocean Dr generally blame the design of the road, the lack of passing lanes or the other idiots on the road for the highway’s high road toll.
On Wednesday the state government said a speed limit reduction to 100km/h on the highway between Breakwater Dr and the Lancelin turn-off would be implemented immediately.
Ten people have died on the road since the start of 2016 and there has been a spate of serious injuries as well.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the state government had worked with the federal government to expedite $7 million in regional road safety funding to build more passing lanes.
Ms Saffioti said construction of the first two passing lanes located either side of the Ledge Point intersection would be completed by mid-2018, while the remaining pair situated about 8km further south would be built in 2018-19.
She said about 30km of audible edge lines had already been applied in three separate sections between Breakwater Dr and the Lancelin turn-off, with all audible centre and edge lines to be finalised by early next year.
Lowering the speed limit was the first of a number of findings in the safety report undertaken by the Indian Ocean Dr highway safety review group.
The group was made up of staff from the Road Safety Commission, WA Police Force and Main Roads WA.
The group identified a series of findings split over the short and medium and long-term that could improve safety along the road.
Many of the recommendations such as a speed limit reduction, audible edge and centre lines, increased police patrols, more signage and additional overtaking lanes are already being implemented by the state government.
Meanwhile, Ms Saffioti and Police and Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said some of the group’s short to medium term recommendations would be given consideration subject to future budgetary processes and the effect of the state government’s initial road safety improvements.
The short to medium term recommendations included further clearing of roadside hazards, reviewing intersection designs to improve the visibility of traffic, road shoulder widening and more overtaking lanes.
