More police officers for Yanchep

The upgrade to Yanchep Police Station is due to be finished later this year.

WORK is underway to expand and upgrade the Yanchep Police Station on Yanchep beach Rd.

When the expansion is completed, the $3 million refurbished station will be able to accommodate four times as many officers.

Butler MLA John Quigley said there had been a big population increase in suburbs in the northern corridor in recent years.

“This expansion will give police officers the additional resources and infrastructure they need to continue to conduct their duties at an optimal level, and to cope with the population growth we are seeing in the electorate of Butler and surrounding suburbs,’’ he said.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts said the upgrade would include a new detainee holding room, interview facilities, dedicated operations room and modern facilities for staff.

Mrs Roberts said the Yanchep Police Station no longer met the needs of the fast growing area and a bigger building was needed to accommodate extra officers.

“It will mean more response teams officers can be based at Yanchep, rather than Joondalup, which should result in faster response times and resolution to calls for assistance,’’ she said.

“The McGowan Government is committed to delivering a police service which meets community needs, reduces crime, delivers better response times and brings more offenders to justice.”

Works are expected to be completed by later this year.
