More resources tackle Nowergup bushfire

MORE firefighters and aerial support have been sent to help 49 firefighters already battling a suspicious bushfire in southern Nowergup.

About 2.45pm A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the extra resources had been sent to help firefighters control the bushfire near Wanneroo Rd and Wattle Ave West.

She said 58 firefighters were now in the area, which had some peat-type soil.

Roads, including Wattle Ave West (only open to local residents) and Dayrell Rd still remain closed.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area but if they are in the area to be aware of firefighters working in the area, reduce their speed and drive carefully due to smoke in the area.

The fire was reported at 3.54am this morning and so far has burnt 1ha of land.

Residents are asked to report any suspicious behavior to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The City of Wanneroo is now managing the bushfire.

DFES said the next update would be provided by 11am tomorrow unless the situation changed.
