A new staircase will provide year-round safe pedestrian access to Two Rocks beach.

TWO Rocks residents will welcome restored beach access from Sovereign Dr with the completion of a new staircase.

Mayor Tracey Roberts said the previous staircase was removed in October 2016 amid concerns for public safety due to beach erosion and structural damage.

Cr Roberts said the safety of residents was a priority for the city.

She thanked residents for their patience during the past 16 months while the old staircase had been closed.

“The new staircase will provide year-round safe pedestrian access to this popular beach and viewing platform,” she said.

The new structure is set back from the original location with steel piles driven into the underlying bedrock.

The staircase and viewing platform has an aluminium substructure and fibre reinforced plastic decking.

Cr Roberts said the project was made possible thanks to state government funding, driven by Attorney General and Butler MLA John Quigley.

She thanked the Two Rocks community for their involvement during the public consultation phase.

“This helped secure $250,000 state government funding through the local projects, local jobs program.

“The city was also successful in receiving $125,000 funding under the state government’s coastal adaptation and protection grant scheme.”
