WHY Choose Her is one of four starters for Gingin trainer Ashley Maley at Belmont Park today.
Maley’s other gallopers include Blue Horse, Double Digit and Indisisive, who will jump from barrier four in the Westspeed Platinum Maiden (1200m) with jockey Joseph Azzopardi booked for the ride.
Backing up in the Michelle Princi 60th Birthday Handicap (1000m) after finishing in second place last Saturday in another 1000m race should not be a problem for Why Choose Her, according to Maley.
“There are no real races for her for another three weeks and after (today) she is going for a break,’’ he said.
“She’ll be racing in a race above her rating but she’s a handy mare and I expect her to continue to be quite good.’’
When she is brought back into work he plans to set the four-year-old for 1200m mare and feature races in the Ascot spring carnival.
Blue Horse who is also up against some higher rating horses in the Tabtouch – Better Your Bet Handicap will also go for a spell after today.
He said the War Chant and Ash mare pulled up well after her third in a 1600m race last Saturday so it was worth backing her up though he would have preferred a softer track, which would have been likely if the rain forecast for Wednesday had eventuated.
The Justine Erkelens-trained Friar Fox and Double Digit will be up against the favourite Cockney Crew in the Western Racepix Belmont Horse of the Year Handicap (1600m).
Double Digit, who has drawn barrier four and will be ridden by top apprentice jockey Jade McNaught, has a rating of 86.
“Double Digit raced in a reasonably flat manner in the Coolgardie Cup,’’ he said.
“He didn’t have the sprint he usually can have but he ground away and finished second.’’
Double Digit is midway through his campaign and Maley plans for him to continue through the spring carnival.
Friar Fox has a rating of 82 and with jockey Steven Parnham in the saddle will carry 58 kg and jump from barrier five.
Gingin trainer Cliff Green has entered Recharger (barrier 12) in the Glenroy Chaff Handicap while jockey Patrick Carbery will ride Smith (barrier 11) for Muchea trainer Alan Mathews.
Green’s other starter today Mosseratti will jump from barrier one in the Vale Bruce Buggins Handicap (2100m) with jockey Steven Parnham on board.
