THE City of Wanneroo held a special council meeting on Tuesday, October 28 to elect a new deputy mayor following the local government election earlier in the month.

At the start of the meeting Mayor Linda Aitken said nominations for the position of deputy mayor had been received from councillors Paul Miles, Vinh Nguyen and Bronwyn Smith.

Councillor Hugh Nguyen added his name to the list when chief executive officer Bill Parker called for final nominations.

The scrutineer was City of Wanneroo corporate strategy and performance director Noelene Jennings.

Following an election by secret ballot Central East ward Cr Paul Miles was declared the successful candidate for the position, which has a two-year term.

The deputy mayor performs the functions of the mayor when authorised to do so under section 5.34 the Local Government Act 1995 – if the office of mayor is vacant or the mayor is not available or unwilling to perform the functions of the mayor.

Mrs Aitken congratulated Cr Paul Miles on his appointment to the role.

“Cr Miles is a valued and committed representative of the city, recognised for his strong advocacy on key community issues,’’ she said.

“I look forward to working alongside Cr Paul Miles and the council team to continue progressing the city’s priorities and supporting our growing community.

“I would also like to thank Cr James Rowe for his contribution as deputy mayor over the past two years and for continuing to make a positive impact as a South ward councillor.”

After winning another term Cr Rowe on LinkedIn thanked those who backed him in for a second term and said he would not be re-nominating as deputy mayor for the next two years.
“I look forward to serving my community as South ward councillor for the next four years,’’ he said.
