THANKS to Yanchep Community Men’s Shed members there is now a defibrillator in the Yanchep light industrial area.
Yanchep Community Men’s Shed (YCMS) treasurer Bob Leeson said a St John Ambulance paramedic had given a talk at the shed’s Men’s Health Day 2019 held at the Yanchep Sports and Social Club on the benefits of the machine and the manner in which to apply for it.
Mr Leeson said because of the age and health of members the possibility of getting a defibrillator had been discussed when they were in their old premises and an application for one was made and granted.
The bulk of the cost was subsidised by the Lotteries Commission of Western Australia.
He said after some of the men’s shed members witnessed someone have a heart attack at the local shopping centre they urged the need for a defibrillator at the shed to the rest of the members.
“The defibrillator has now been installed on the south external wall of the shed at 2 Bracknell St,’’ he said.
“Glen from St John Ambulance came and gave the members and some wives and partners (30 people) a very informative address on what to do if someone has a heart attack.
“He also showed how to operate the defibrillator – this was much appreciated by all who attended.
“Important messages of the day were, despite having a defibrillator don’t forget to ring for an ambulance as soon as possible.
“The other advice was if you can’t help stand well back so those assisting are not hampered.’’
As a finale a flag raising ceremony was held in conjunction with the Yanchep Two Rocks RSL who also use the men’s shed office for meetings.
