FIREYS invited residents to visit the Yanchep fire station yesterday evening so they could thank the community for their support and enjoy some Christmas cheer.
When Yanchep News Online visited the biggest line was of children waiting to sit in the station’s fire trucks.
Three-year-old Kyzer Glassie of Quinns Rocks gave everyone the thumbs up when it was his turn.
Yanchep Volunteer Fire & Rescue Service secretary Eva Darby said the event was organised so the service could show their appreciation for the donations, including food, water and drinks from the community during the Yanchep bushfire and afterwards as well as to celebrate Christmas.
She said the bushfire had created more of an awareness in the community of what the service does.
“It hit close to home – it becomes a reality not something you see on TV,” she said.
Yanchep resident Julie Otremba said she attended the event to support the local fire brigade which supported the community so well during the bushfire last year.
Georgie Tomkins of Yanchep said her young son Tyler had been obsessed with the firefighters since the bushfire.
“He keeps telling me he wants to be a fire truck when he grows up,’’ she said.
Chris Benton of Yanchep said they were at the event to show their children around the fire station and for them to see the firefighters and the equipment.
Mr Benton said they would also use the food trucks at the event to support locals.
The Yanchep bushfire started on December 11 last year.
