An evacuation centre has been opened at the Guilderton Country Club and a new watch and act area has been added south of Lancelin Rd.

The following alert has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

This is an emergency broadcast. It is essential that the words are not changed.

Please note changes to the warning areas. A new Watch and Act Area has been added south of Lancelin Road. An evacuation centre has been opened at Guilderton Country Club.

Bushfire EMERGENCY WARNING for western part of LANCELIN in the SHIRE OF GINGIN

ALERT LEVEL:

A bushfire EMERGENCY WARNING is in place for people in parts of Lancelin Townsite in an area north of Old Ledge Point Road, south and east of Walker Avenue and Kendall Road in the western part of LANCELIN in the SHIRE OF GINGIN.

  • You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes.
  • Homes in Lancelin Townsite are under threat by fire now.
  • It is burning north west toward Lancelin townsite.

WHAT TO DO:

For people in an area bound by Fisher Way, Casserley Way and Walker Avenue to the coast leave now toward the Lancelin Jetty.

  • Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute could put your life in danger.

For people in an area bounded by Walker Avenue, Casserley Way and the coast, leave in a northerly direction along Walker Avenue. 

For people north and east of Walker Avenue

  • If your plan is to stay and actively defend, do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. You need to have access to an independent water supply, and start patrolling your property to put out spot fires.
  • Close all doors and windows and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
  • If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home.
  • Go to a room in your home away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape.
  • Choose a room with two exits and water such as a kitchen or laundry.
  • If you are not at home, it’s too dangerous to return.

Bushfire WATCH AND ACT for parts of LANCELIN in the SHIRE OF GINGIN

ALERT LEVEL:

A bushfire WATCH AND ACT is in place for people in northern parts of Lancelin Townsite in an area north of Walker Avenue and Kendall Road and Lancelin Sand Dunes to the north and in an area between Wheeler Road and the coastline to the south. .

  • There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching in the area and conditions are changing.

WHAT TO DO:

  • If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear.
  • If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now.
  • If you plan to stay and actively defend, do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. You need to have access to an independent water supply, and start patrolling your property to put out spot fires.
  • Keep doors and windows closed and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
  • If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:

  • The bushfire is moving in a north westerly direction.
  • It is out of control and unpredictable.

SAFER PLACE:

  • The Department of Communities has set up an evacuation centre at Guilderton Country Club on Wedge Street, Guilderton.
  • Please take any essential items such as medications and identification to the evacuation centre.
  • Pets (except recognised assistance animals) are not allowed inside evacuation centres for health and safety reasons, so you should make alternative arrangements for them. If this is not possible, please still proceed to the evacuation centre with your pets and await further advice.
  • A shelter has been established at Lancelin Hall on Miragliotta Street, Lancelin.

ROAD CLOSURES AND CONDITIONS:

Avoid the area and be aware of fire and emergency services personnel working on site.

Lancelin Road is closed.

  • For people west of Old Ledge Point Road, it is too dangerous to leave east towards Indian Ocean Drive.
  • For people east of Old Ledge Point Road, travel south towards Indian Ocean Drive.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke. Road information may also be available from Main Roads WA by visiting the Main Roads Travel Map, calling 138 138 or by contacting your Local Government Authority.

ANIMAL WELFARE
Owners or carers of livestock, pets and companion animals should activate their own animal welfare plan. During a bushfire take advice from Local Government Authorities to protect the lives of your animals while keeping yourself safe.

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:

  • Firefighters are on the scene, actively fighting the fire.

DRONES AND AERIAL SUPPORT:
Never fly a drone, model aircraft or multirotor near bushfires. Doing so poses a major safety risk to firefighting personnel in the air and on the ground, and forces aircraft to be grounded or redirected, hindering firefighting efforts.
