Man charged after Butler house fire

A Butler man has been charged after a starting a fire in a garage, which spread to the rest of the home.

ARSON squad investigators have arrested a 36-year-old man after an investigation into a house fire in Butler on Wednesday, July 12.

WA Police allege the man went to the home on Pendleton Crescent about 2.20pm and entered the garage where he used an ignition source to ignite property in the garage, causing the items to catch fire.

The fire engulfed the garage roof space, spreading to the remainder of the house but an occupant inside the home was able to get out safely.

A police spokeswoman said the fire caused significant structural, smoke and cosmetic damage, rendering the home uninhabitable and beyond repair.

The total cost of the damage is estimated to be more than $300,000.

The 36-year-old Butler man has been charged with criminal damage by fire and possession of drug paraphernalia in or on which there was a prohibited drug or plant.

He was due to appear before the Joondalup Magistrates Court yesterday July 13.
