Pearce likely to gain metro suburbs and lose Wheatbelt shires

Christian Porter’s defamation action against the ABC has led to Prime Minister Scott Morrison getting advice about conflicts of interest that could arise if Mr Porter remains in the role of Attorney General.

PEARCE will gain more metropolitan suburbs while losing rural shires if a proposed redistribution of the federal seat is adopted.

The proposed redistribution would result in City of Wanneroo suburbs, which used to be in the seat of Cowan such as Tapping, Jandabup, Wanneroo, Gnangara, Pearsall, Wangara and Landsdale shifting to the seat of Pearce.

At the same time the redistribution proposal for Pearce released today by the Australian Electoral Commission allows for the transfer of six Wheatbelt shires, including the Shire of Gingin.

If the redistribution goes ahead as proposed the Shire of Gingin and the other Wheatbelt shires – Beverly, Chittering, Northam, Toodyay and York would join the seat of Durack, which covers a big area starting from Kununurra in the north of the state.

On Friday, March 19 the Australian Electoral commissioner Tom Rogers said under the proposed redistribution 15 Western Australian division names would be retained but the division of Stirling would be abolished with the boundaries of other WA divisions amended to accommodate the change.

The report and maps showing the proposed electoral divisions can be found at the WA redistribution page on the AEC website.

Individuals and organisations are able to lodge objections to the committee’s proposals from now until 6pm (AWST) Friday, April 16 and – once these are published – submit comments on the objections until 6pm (AWST) on Friday, April 30.

Lodge an objection to the proposed redistribution.
