MORE than 200 students welcomed the Perth Scorchers to Shorehaven Primary School last week to celebrate a community fan day involving some of the team’s star players.

Shorehaven PS students enjoyed a hands-on cricket clinic and interactive information session, followed by signings with Lance Morris and Matthew Spoors, members of the Perth Scorchers men’s team.

On October 1 Perth Scorchers said they had handed spin-bowling all-rounder Spoors his first BBL contract

“Formerly a top-order batter, WA Cricket Academy member Spoors has transformed himself into an attacking leg-spinner capable of scoring quick runs in the middle-order,’’ a Perth Scorchers post said.

“The 25-year-old was dominant for Scarborough last season, sharing the 2023-24 Olly Cooley medal with Perth veteran Jono Wells as WA premier cricket’s best and fairest player.’’

According to Cricket.com.au Morris from Dunsborough earnt the ‘wild thing’ nickname not long after he had moved to the Western Australian capital as a raw teenager who bowled at frightening pace.

The event was a great example of working together to inspire and engage students, while encouraging them to live a more active lifestyle, according to Shorehaven PS principal David Hall.

As the principal partner of the Perth Scorchers for the 24-25 season, Peet is taking cricket to schools and communities by sharing the sport with cricket fans of all abilities and inspiring the next generation of players.

Peet managing director and chief executive officer Brendan Gore said the Scorchers community fan days have become a highlight on Peet’s summer calendar.

“We’re proud to partner with Shorehaven Primary School this year, to provide students with access to professional athletes, and supporting skills development within a fun supportive environment,’’ he said.

Shorehaven PS principal David Hall said he was excited to see the event come to life after months of collaboration and planning.

“We’re grateful to both Peet and the Perth Scorchers for coming along and engaging with the students ahead of an action-packed season of cricket,’’ he said.

“This event is a great example of how we can work together to inspire and engage students, while encouraging them to live a more active lifestyle.

“Our girls cricket team also recently won their interschool matches and are now off to compete at the regional competition in early November.

“This event will provide further inspiration and encourage them to do their best.”
