The Shire of Gingin has approved the head lease of the Guilderton café to Sun City Group, which operates the Two Rocks IGA, effective June 1.

THE family company, which operates the Two Rocks IGA, now has the head lease for the Guilderton Café and General Store and are working to get the café open as soon as possible.

Chris Young, whose father John Young is the managing director of the family company, said Sun City Group now had the head lease from the Shire of Gingin and they would be sub-leasing the café.

In a sign that Sun City Group will move quickly to install a café operator Chris Young said they were already talking to one or two people about leasing the café and hoped to have a decision soon.

At a special council meeting on Tuesday, May 30 Shire of Gingin councillors agreed to reassign the existing commercial lease for the Guilderton Café and General Store from Belgravia Health & Leisure to Group Pty Ltd to Sun City Group.

The Young family’s company has been operating the supermarket at the general store location next to the café as a sub-lessee since 2022.

Shire of Gingin President Wayne Fewster said during the time Sun City Group had been operating the supermarket in Guilderton the shire had received nothing but positive feedback from the community on the terrific service they provide.

“We are really pleased with this outcome and look forward to working with John and Sun City Group to see this facility open and providing the community and visitors with great service once again,’’ he said.”

John Young said they were hoping to bring to Guilderton and surrounds a really good hospitality experience for locals and visitors to enjoy.

A former lessee Kerry Enright her husband Peter signed a lease for the premises back in July 2014 and took over the running of the general store on August 4, 2014 and had wanted to extend the lease but they eventually became embroiled in a dispute with the Shire of Gingin about renewal of the lease

In August 2021 after the shire gave Belgravia Leisure the lease the company said major upgrades would transform the Guilderton General Store into a clean, fresh and modern beachside café and general store.

But on January 31 this year Belgravia Leisure closed the café blaming increasing operating costs which it said had made the existing business model unsustainable.
