THE Two Rocks beach access staircase has won an award for the City of Wanneroo.

The coastal works project took out top honours at the 2019 Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (WA) Excellence Awards for the best public works project under $2 million.

The $450,000 project, including $375,000 from the state government through the Department of Transport, was completed and commissioned on February 7, 2018.

Work involved the construction of a staircase and viewing platform, piled into underlying limestone bedrock beneath the dune system and set back into the dune to account for projected changes to the coastline over the asset’s 25-year design life.

At the awards the project was recognised for its high level of community engagement and collaboration throughout the planning and construction phases.

Mayor Tracey Roberts praised the award win and the community-led approach of the project.

“It is fantastic to see the city recognised for the successful delivery of another important community project in partnership with the state government,’’ she said.

“Delivery of the Two Rocks beach access staircase is a direct result of community consultation and feedback.

“We worked closely with the Two Rocks Beach Action Group and other community stakeholders throughout the project to identify the best location for the beach access and ensure the design met their current and future needs.

“I would also like to extend my thanks to Butler MLA John Quigley for his strong support and to the dedicated staff at the city and our project partners, the Department of Transport and Landmark Products, without whom the project would not have been possible.”
