THE City of Wanneroo has a new deputy mayor, with Central ward councillor Frank Cvitan voted in at a special council meeting on Tuesday, October 29.
Cr Cvitan’s election followed a secret ballot after new North Coast ward councillor Chris Baker also nominated for the position of deputy mayor.
As per the Local Government (Constitution) Amendment Regulations 2005 elected members voted by placing a tick against their preference as shown on a ballot paper.
When the votes were counted Cr Cvitan had received nine votes and Cr Baker six votes.
A deputy mayor, who has no specific statutory role or responsibility beyond that of a councillor apart from standing in when the mayor is not available, is paid an annual local government allowance, which is 35 per cent of the annual local government allowance paid to the mayor.
With election of the new deputy mayor out of the way the councillors then voted to appoint delegates and deputy delegates to committees and advisory and working groups.
Mayor Tracey Roberts welcomed Cr Cvitan to his new role, highlighting his experience, passion and understanding of local issues.
Cr Cvitan was first elected to the council in 1999, serving for 10 years and again from 2011.
“Frank has dutifully served the community for 18 years as a ward councillor, showing dedication, understanding and an approachable nature,” she said.
“His experience and knowledge of our city is invaluable and I look forward to working closely with him as he takes on the important role of deputy mayor.”
Cr Cvitan was elected for a two-year term, with the role re-elected every ordinary council election cycle.
Cr Roberts also thanked Cr Natalie Sangalli for her dedication and commitment as deputy Mayor during 2017-2019 and congratulated her on her re-election as a North Coast ward councillor for a four-year term.
