LANCELIN Police are looking for an arsonist after a bushfire, which destroyed about 130ha, was found to have six ignition points.

The bushfire was first reported on Tuesday, October 15 with firefighters having the blaze fully contained and 90 per cent controlled as of 7pm yesterday.

In a statement Shire of Gingin President Sam Collard said on June 20 prescribed burning was undertaken in the Lancelin area, particularly along Casserley Way in addition to Kendall Rd, Collins St and Cockram Rd.

“This caused some consternation at the time with complaints regarding the smoke but thanks to the completion of this burn, no homes were lost at yesterday’s fire due to approximately a 75 per cent reduction in the fuel load on Casserley Way,’’ he said.

“Whilst mitigation burning can inconvenience residents, its benefit was well and truly demonstrated at Tuesday’s blaze.”

If anyone in the area saw any suspicious behaviour they are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Mr Collard said the Shire of Gingin and incident controller Tim McGrade extend their thanks to the bushfire brigade volunteers, volunteer fire and rescue,  Department of Fire and Emergency Services career fire and rescue, DFES career management staff,  St John Ambulance, WA Police and police airwing, Lancelin and Ledge Point business owners for supplies of food, fuel, etc to the firefighting effort and shire staff.

“Without their dedicated assistance this fire could have ended in significant disaster but as a result of their quick action, no homes or lives were lost,’’ he said.
