DESTRUCTIVE wind gusts in excess of 125 km/h are still likely over an area southwest of a line from Lancelin to Albany including Perth, during Sunday evening, according to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Earlier today more than 6000 customers from Yanchep, Nowergup, Neerabup, Eglinton, Alkimos and Ridgewood were without power.

About 6pm Western Power said Yanchep was experiencing multiple outages, including one about 4.30pm which affected almost 3000 customers and that it could be 7pm tomorrow before their power was restored.

But just after 7pm Western Power appeared to have restored power to many homes in Yanchep and by 9pm the outages page said there were still 288 affected customers in Yanchep with an estimated restoration time of 7pm Monday.

Chris Porter posted in the Gingin Community Notice Board about 8.15pm that there was a tree across Military Rd near Chitna Rd in Neergabby.

Some 1036 Lanclein customers lost their power earlier today but by 9.15pm Western Power estimated 60 customers were still without power, which they estimated would be back on by 2am tomorrow.

At 9.30pm the outage page said 161 customers in Neergabby, Woodridge, Wanerie and Cowalla should have their power restored by 6.30pm tomorrow.

Western Power said at 5pm more than 30,000 customers across the network were without power in the Metropolitan and South West regions.

Affected customers were in the South West (including Donnybrook, Balingup, Bunbury, Augusta and surrounds) and Perth metropolitan area (including Yanchep, Langford, Ferndale, Hamilton Hill, Gosnells and Stoneville and surrounds).

Emergency response crews were working to address more than 160 hazards and outages caused by severe storm conditions.

“The damaging and destructive winds associated with the storm front have thrown debris, including tree branches, into the network damaging equipment and bringing down powerlines,’’ Western Power said.

“We have restored thousands of customers throughout the day but as the storm front continues, numbers may climb as damage is reported.

“There are further damaging and destructive winds forecast throughout the evening, and we recommend affected customers prepare for extended outages with many customers expected to be without power overnight.

“Our priority is responding to reported hazards to ensure the safety of the community and our crews.

“Due to the severe weather and dangerous winds, our crews cannot currently undertake repair works as it is unsafe to operate equipment like elevated work platforms or conduct network patrols via helicopter.

“We’re communicating with impacted customers via SMS on updates including estimated restoration times and response efforts.”
