A SHARK warning has been issued for waters surrounding the Alkimos wreck after an interaction with a shark was reported by a member of the public whilst fishing from a kayak.
The Department of Primary Industries and regional Development said a member of the public reported a 2m shark nudged his kayak whilst he was trolling for fish around the Alkimos wreck site.
What to do:
- Take additional caution in the Alkimos wreck area.
- Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
- Adhere to beach closures advised by the City of Wanneroo. Beaches are closed 1km either side of Alkimos wreck.
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
What authorities are doing:
City of Wanneroo has closed the beaches 1km either side of Alkimos wreck. Rangers are patrolling the beaches adjacent to the wreck site and advising water users of the risk of sharks in the area.
A Fisheries vessel will be on the water monitoring the area, and the Surf Life Saving WA Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter will also conduct a sweep of the area this afternoon.
