A STORM advice – monitor conditions – issued for the Perth metropolitan area extends to north of Lancelin and past Gingin in the east.

According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Australian warning system page an advice alert means an incident is active but there is no immediate threat to lives or homes with people being advised to be aware and keep up to date.

A Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecast for the Perth area including Yanchep and other northern suburbs updated at 9.39am said strong northwesterly damaging winds averaging 50km/h to 65km/h with peak gusts of around 100km/h were likely to develop about the front over the South West district during Sunday morning, extending to the Lower West and South Coastal districts, including Perth, during the afternoon.

Locally destructive wind gusts with peak gusts in excess of 125km/h are also possible along the front over coastal parts of the South West and Lower West districts south of and including Mandurah during Sunday afternoon and may cause significant damage to homes and property.

At 11.03am the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said BoM had advised at 10.50am that the strong cold front was approaching the southwest of the state, bringing vigorous northwesterly winds and a stream of tropical moisture over western parts of the South West land division.

The front is expected to reach the far southwest from late Sunday morning and extend along the west coast, reaching Perth during Sunday afternoon.

Conditions will briefly improve overnight on Sunday before a second cold front approaches on Monday morning, bringing widespread impacts to broader parts of the South West land division for the remainder of the day.

DFES advised residents to pack away, secure or tie down outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items around their home which could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.

Also to prepare an emergency kit with a radio that runs off batteries, a torch, spare batteries and a first aid kit.
