THE creator of The Play is seeking talented young artists from Yanchep, Butler, Clarkson, Alkimos and surrounding areas to star in an upcoming touring 30-minute showcase during Youth Week, from April 10 to April 17.

Author, youth crime prevention and community development consultant as well as executive producer of The Play Brian Montgomery said the musical was a transformative fictional production tackling real-life social issues.

Mr Montgomery said the issues included exposure to domestic violence, bullying and cyberbullying, isolation and neglect, racism and homophobia, underage vaping, drinking, and antisocial behaviour, mental health struggles and gang formation, illegal weapons and substance abuse.

He said by providing a safe, creative outlet for self-expression, the initiative empowered young people to confront the challenges head-on, using their voices and talents to drive meaningful social change.

The Landing Alkimos is hosting talent shows on Monday, February 24 and Tuesday, February 25.

Talent shows will also be held at the Whale & Ale in Clarkson on Wednesday, February 26 and Thursday, February 27 with auditions for the Youth Week showcase to take place on Saturday, February 15,  Sunday, February 16 and Sunday, February 23.

“Two Rocks resident Pete Flude is the new musical director of The Play.

“I’m a professional producer and musician with more than 20 years experience in the industry,’’ he said.

“Over my career I have released several albums in styles including pop, rock, folk and indie with a number of artists.

“I have also acquired a worldwide publishing deal in Canada with legendary producer Mark S Berry.

“Along with wife Faye Flude, a multi-instrumentalist, classically trained performer, transcriber and music teacher, we are extremely excited to be part of this project.’’

In a letter of support City of Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken said the opportunity for young people to engage in performing arts programs could provide a positive impact on their personal growth, creativity and overall well-being.

Teacher and parent Neha Bansal said The Play’s portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of young people made it an essential work for schools because it addressed critical issues such as trauma, bullying, prejudice, and self-acceptance.

The Western Australia Multicultural Association (WAMA) said the vision behind The Play, coupled with the regional talent shows, represented an opportunity to uplift and amplify the voices of young people and communities who may not otherwise have the chance to showcase their talents.

Banksia Grove resident Alfonso Demasi said the musical had the potential to engage, uplift and resonate with individuals across all walks of life.

Peter Moyes Anglican Community School principal Benjamin Lomas said The Play was an opportunity to engage young minds in meaningful discussions about the complex challenges and critical issues facing society today, providing a platform to foster student empathy, critical thinking and social awareness.
