MAIN Roads WA provides an update on why the 90 km/h speed limit on Wanneroo Rd between Yanchep Beach Rd and Hester Ave has been reduced.

Since July 15 the speed limit on the section of Wanneroo Rd between Yanchep Beach Rd and Hester Ave has been 80 km/h.

A Main Roads spokeswoman said it regularly reviewed speed limits to ensure they remained appropriate for the road environment and how the road was used.

“Following a recent assessment it was determined that an 80 km/h speed limit was more appropriate for this section of Wanneroo Rd, as it is better aligned with the current road conditions, surrounding development and overall function,’’ she said.

“The reduced speed limit is intended to support safer travel while maintaining the efficient movement of traffic.”

Yanchep News Online asked Main Roads if the speed reduction had anything to do with increased volumes of traffic on that section of Wanneroo Rd or if it was in response to the number of crashes on that section of Wanneroo Rd.

“The reduction was not based solely on increased traffic volumes.

“Main Roads considers the overall road environment when determining an appropriate speed limit, including traffic volumes and movements, roadside development, access points and broader safety considerations.

“The reduction was not made solely in response to crash history.

“Crash data was considered as part of the assessment, together with the broader road environment and how this section of Wanneroo Rd is currently used.”
