HEAVY rain could reach Perth this weekend as a result of a tropical low over the western Gascoyne moving very slowly to the west during the next two days.

About 1.30pm today the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM)said from Friday the tropical low was expected to track southwards offshore from the west coast and could bring moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds about coastal districts, including Perth this weekend.

“As the system moves south of the Shark Bay area, the heavy rain is expected to become confined to the southern side of the system and falls to the mid west region should not be as high as the northern regions,’’ BoM said.

“Perth is likely to see 20 to 40 millimetres of rain, but may receive as much as 50 to 80 millimetres during the weekend.’’

Meanwhile BoM said the sea breeze was expected to push any remaining smoke away from much of Perth’s metropolitan area but northern suburbs could still be affected by smoke tomorrow.

A period of dry and gusty easterly winds is expected across the Wooroloo bushfire site from overnight today (Wednesday) into Friday.

“Winds are forecast to remain fresh and gusty easterlies during the weekend with conditions then becoming humid from expected rain from the north.

“Shifts in winds can provide relief to some areas under threat from fires but can put other areas under threat, affecting firefighting efforts in different ways.

“The southerly change today will keep temperatures in Perth below the recent run of mid 30s, with maximum temperatures falling into the mid to high 20s from Thursday.”
