WORK will start in February on new toilet facilities and additional parking as well as improving paths, services, landscaping and furniture in the southern part of the Two Rocks marina.
Worth $3.1 million the southern foreshore landscaping project is part of the second phase of redevelopment at the Two Rocks marina.
There will be continued access to the boat launching facilities throughout the project, which is due for completion mid-year.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the project was another important step forward for the Two Rocks marina upgrade, which would deliver long awaited improvements while implementing the long-term vision for the marina.
“The contract has been awarded to local indigenous company Carey MC Pty Ltd, in Malaga which anticipates during construction approximately eight direct and 26 indirect jobs will be created and supported,’’ she said.
Ms Saffioti said the project continued the $15 million transformation of Two Rocks marina.
She said since the Department of Transport (DoT)) resumed operation of the facility in late 2014, almost $19m had been spent upgrading Two Rocks marina.
This included the removal of 14 abandoned vessels, the installation of new modern floating jetties and replacement of the aged, fixed P jetty, refurbishment of the West-Link jetty, removal of the original fuel jetty and improvements to the breakwater structure.
In August last year DoT said new live catch storage depots would be built in the hard stand area at the Two Rocks marina once two old buildings are demolished.
DoT coastal facilities director Donna West said staged demolition of building A (the double story building) and building B (the single storey building) in the main hard stand area would allow for commercial operations to continue during the works and give the operators time to construct the new modern seafood receival depots.
DoT said demolition of building B at Two Rocks Marina was due to start in September and in December confirmed demolition of building B, which involved the removal of asbestos was underway.
This week Ms Saffioti said the southern foreshore landscaping project aligned with the Two Rocks marina master plan, completed in December 2019 in close consultation with the Two Rocks marina redevelopment reference group and wider stakeholder groups, providing an aspirational long-term vision for the marina.
Butler MLA John Quigley said the awarding of the contract was another step forward in transforming the Two Rocks marina, into a major destination that could be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
