Celebrating a mural created in collaboration with Two Rocks Primary School Year 6 students was part of the new Two Rocks Village family fun day activities on Saturday, June 13.

Designed by artist Linzi Carter the mural captures the coastal identity of Two Rocks and the greater Yanchep area.

The mural was inspired by the area’s aquatic and fisheries environment with the artwork reflecting both the ocean landscape and the marine industry.

Illustrated throughout the design are marine forms found along the coastline – cone shells, abalone shells, turban shells, cowrie shells, the eleven-armed sea star and the western rock lobster – each symbolising the abundance and diversity of life beneath the waves.

Ms Carter said it was a joy to celebrate the official opening of the new play space and finished mural with so many children and families who were part of the project.

“The students and I enjoyed spending time also with City of Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken who is a great supporter of community arts projects with youth and young artists,’’ she said.

As the artist she demonstrated the mural skillset to the students and talked about the inspiration for the mural.

“We talked a lot about the career pathway of an artist and practical knowledge and skills such as mural skillset, safety in site and tool maintenance.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for local young artists to experience working with a professional artist in a real life project, developing new skills and a broader understanding of art as a profession.

“I hope the students feel inspired to explore their artistic talents and that in years to come, we will see more beautiful murals in Two Rocks.”

She said Wattyl sponsored paint for the project and Woolworths sponsored snacks and drinks for the students.

An Erceg Management spokeswoman said it was “a fantastic opening day and family event”.

“We had fantastic feedback from the local community – someone even commented on our post ‘best day ever’,’’ she said.

“Our local ice-cream van actually ran out of soft serve.

“It was very popular, as was the playground and the face painter.

“The chefs also gave out all of their cooking samples, Stacey (Garlett from Whadjuk Catering’s) native scones were a huge hit, as was the Two Rocks Tentacles octopus.

“The owner actually popped in to say hello and said it was a great event.

“I think it’s highlighted the need for free, family-friendly, community activities in the local Two Rocks area, so we will try to continue running (children’s) activities more in the future – for things like school holidays etc.’’
