CITY of Wanneroo staff and councillors recently enjoyed a Welcome to Country and a traditional dance performed by Wadjuk Northside Aboriginal Dancers.
Among those to attend were Jason Barrow, Shaun Nannup, Junior Nona, Derek Nannup, Len Yarran, Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts, Wanneroo chief executive officer Daniel Simms, deputy mayor Frank Cvitan, councillors Lewis Flood and Jacqueline Huntley and community and place director Debbie Terelinck.
Mrs Roberts said NAIDOC Week was a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Heal Country’, called for all Australians to recognise, protect, and maintain all aspects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage,’’ she said.
“We at the City of Wanneroo are committed to upholding this message by implementing the actions set out in our Reconciliation Action Plan.
“Heal Country is such a timely and significant theme, not only for this year’s NAIDOC events, but for all Australians every day.
NAIDOC is the acronym for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.
The acronym has become the title for the whole week, not just the day.
Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAIDOC Week.
