LJM Memorial Hospice is providing the community with an opportunity to have a conversation about life events including palliative and end-of-life care at a D2KD event in Yanchep on Sunday, August 8.
Inspired by the Groundswell Project’s Dying to Know Day LJM Memorial Hospice founder Kate McLaughlin decided to create an event for people to find out about and discuss what options and choices are available to them and their loved ones.
When Ms McLaughlin’s husband Liam died from brain cancer four years ago she established the charity with the aim of increasing access to good quality personalised palliative and end-of-life care in the northern suburbs.
For the inaugural event, the charity’s team has organised activities at the Y.hub at 128 Yanchep Beach Rd from 10am to 2pm.
The activities include a dance show featuring Aboriginal community members, an exhibition of art created by school children on the theme of families and life cycles and face painting and seed planting activities.
Bernardine Brierty from Bowra and O’Dea Funeral Directors will talk about some of the ways that people have chosen to celebrate a life.
Some community members will share some of their personal experiences and Andrew Allsop from Silver Chain will talking about what support is available to enable people from different backgrounds receive the care they need at home.
There will also be a free workshop for community members to learn about Advance Care Planning and find out about how they can take action now to ensure their loved ones know about their wishes well in advance.
LJM Memorial Hospice is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
Last year the charity made a submission to the Joint Select Committee on Palliative Care in Western Australia, supporting a recommendation by the 2018 My Life, My Choice report that an inpatient specialist palliative care hospice providing publicly funded beds be established in the northern suburbs of Perth.
